Are two sides better than one?

What's better than a single sided solar panel? Why a double sided solar panel of course. You might be asking yourself, so how on Earth do you smultaneously illuminate both sides of a double sided solar panel? The answer.....reflected light.

With exception to surfaces that are pitch black in color, nearly all surfaces reflect some degree of light and double sided solar panels, otherwise known as Bifacial solar panels, take advantage of this principle. The double sided increase in power production is especially noticeable in ground mount installations where a light colored material such as white rock or sand has been placed below the ground mounted array.

Amazingly, Bifacial solar panels can continue to produce some power
even when the front side of these panels are completely covered in snow.

Another adavantage over traditional single sided solar panels is that this technology uses specially designed cells that use higher performance N-type technology whereas most traditional single sided cells use lower efficiency P-type technology.

N-type silicon cells not only offer the potential for higher efficiency but also provide for reduce light induced degradation than is typically seen in P-type solar cells. Here's an excellent article that explains the advantages of N-type solar cells versus P-type cells

Here's a list of a few more reasons why your next solar system should include Bifacial, double sided solar panels.

1. The Bifacial N-type solar panels that are used in Bifacial solar systems offer a much higher PTC to STC performance ratio than competing technologies. For example, The new 300 Watt, 60 cell solar panels that are used in Bifacial solar systems offers a better 94.3% PTC to STC ratio rating for better "Real World" performance according to the California Energy Commission's performance rating listings than over 119 of SunPower's solar panel models. 2. Bifacial N-type solar panels offer a heat resistant -0.28%/degree C temperature coefficient for better performance in warm/hot climates.

3. Bifacial N-type solar panels offer a minus 60 degree C extreme cold temperature rating.

4. Bifacial N-type solar panels are less than 1/4 inch thin and are made with a stronger, see through, glass on glass, frameless contruction that offer far better aesthetics than aluminum framed, plastic backed solar panels.

5. Bifacial N-type solar panels offer efficiency ratings of up to 22.6%

6. Glass on glass design does not require any module grounding.

7. Frameless design makes these solar panels ideal for harsh environments such as installation near bodies of salt water.

With a faster return on investment due to Bifacial technology's lower cost when compared to competing technologies and it's higher energy yield, the time is right to consider Bifacial solar technology in you residential or commercial project. https://vimeo.com/112775777
